What is Sahacharadi Kuzhambu?

Sahacharadi Kuzhambu is a medicated oil. 

What is the difference between Sahacharadi Tailam & Sahacharadi Kuzhambu?

Sahacharadi Tailam is a medicated oil prepared in sesame oil, while Sahacharadi Kuzhambu is a medicated oil prepared in sesame oil, ghee & castor oil.

Ayurvedic concept

Primary ingredients of Sahacharadi Kuzhambu

Sahacharadi Tailam explained in ‘Ashtangahrudaya’. The formulation is explained in the context of ‘Vatavyadhi Chikitsitham’. Sahacharadi Kuzhambu is the same formulation of Sahacharadi Tailam. In Sahacharadi Taila, the base is sesame oil, and in Kuzhambu, the content is sesame oil and castor oil.

Sahachara(Nilgirianthus ciliatus )

Sahachara (Karimkurinji in Malayalam) is a shrub, that grows about one meter, primarily found in the Western Ghats. It grows in wet forests and plains. The plant bears blue flowers usually blooming in September. The root of the plant is mainly used in Ayurveda. 

Sahachara contains terpenoids, flavonoids, phytosterols, and tannins. The plant shows anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antimicrobial, antidiabetic and hepatoprotective activities.

Dasamoolam

Dasamoolam contains roots of ten plants. They are

  • Bilva (Aegle marmelos)
  • Agnimantha (Premna serratifolia)
  • Shyonakam (Oroxylum indicum)
  • Patala (Stereospermum suaveolens)
  • Gambhari (Gmelina arborea)
  • Brihati (Solanum indicum)
  • Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum)
  • Shalaparni (Desmodium gangeticum)
  • Prishniparni (Uraria picta)
  • Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris)

Pharmacological actions  

Dasamoola is an anti-inflammatory, anti-arthritic, analgesic, antispasmodic, adaptogenic, antioxidant, neuroprotective, uterine tonic, etc.

Shathavari(Asparagus racemosus

Pharmacological activities include galactagogue effect, antisecretory, antiulcer, antitussive, adaptogenic, antibacterial, hepatoprotective, and cardiovascular actions. 

Kushta (Saussurea lappa)

It possesses anti-arthritic, antiviral, anticonvulsant activities.

Dhenuksheera (Cow milk)

Cow’s milk is a good source of calcium, protein, vitamins, and iodine.

Eranda tailam(castor oil)

Castor oil is a powerful laxative, natural moisturizer. It promotes wound healing, reduces acne, and has anti-inflammatory effects. 

Sahacharadi Kuzhambu and joint diseases

a)Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis. Osteoarthritis occurs when the protective cartilage that cushions the end of the bones in your joints starts to wear down.

Pain, stiffness, loss of flexibility of joints are the common symptoms seen. External application of Sahacharadi Kuzhambu over the body helps to reduce the symptoms of osteoarthritis. 

b)Rheumatoid arthritis
